14 dead as two Davao provinces are placed under state of calamity

The province of Davao de Oro was placed under a state of calamity as severe flooding and landslides caused by shear line weather system triggered heavy rains in most part of the province.
The adjacent Davao del Norte is already under a state of calamity as a result of the non-stop rains.
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan adopted the resolution declaring the province under a state following an emergency session.
“The passage of a declaration of a State of Calamity allows expedient response and recovery efforts through the utilization of its Quick Response Fund and promptly address the needs of affected families and individuals,” the provincial government has announced.
The provincial disaster management office said at least 14 persons have already been confirmed dead as heavy rainfall induced landslides in Monkayo and Maragusan.
So far, 51,140 households or 182,653 iindividuals have been adversely affected by heavy rains throughout the province.
Initial assessment of damage was placed at Php 130 million, with at least 3,700 framers and fisherfolk affected.
The Office of Civil Defense - Davao region (OCD-Davao) reported that the fatalities were reported in Barangay Mount Diwata in Monkayo town. One person died in Maragusan while another two died in Davao City due to the landslides.
