The camp of embattled religious sect founder Pastor Apollo Quiboloy on Wednesday (January 24) challenged former followers to file a complaint against him instead of using the Senate in allegedly defaming his character.
Quiboloy critic, Asst. Minority Leader and Gabriela Women’s Party Rep. Arlene Brosas readily agreed that Quiboloy should be investigated by the Department of Justice for sex trafficking, rape and physical abuse of women and children.
However, Brosas said the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality must continue its legislative inquiry into the alleged criminal activities of Quiboloy and the offenses committed by his congregation.
"Yung pumupusturang 'Appointed Son of God', kampon pala ni Satanas. Ilang taon na ang lumipas, wala pa ring nagiging aksyon ang gobyerno para mapanagot si Quiboloy sa kanyang mga krimen laban sa kababaihan at mga bata," Brosas said in a press statement.
During a Senate hearing presided over by Senator Risa Hontiveros, seeral former KOJC members, including two Ukranian women< recounted the sexual and physical abuses they allegedly suffered in the hands of Quiboloy when they pursued the position of “pastoral” in his church.
Quiboloy did not show up in the hearing, prompting Hontiveros to recommend the issuance of a subpoena that would subject him to possible penalties if he fails to comply.
Lawyer Ferdinand Topacio, Quiboloy’s counsel, assailed Hontiveros’ intent as being “questionable”.
Topacio said the Senate is clothed with a different authority in conducting probes as compared to the DOJ or the National Bureau of Investigation. He said those who claimed being abused by Quiboloy must seek justice before the proper body.
“Bakit po sa ganitong pamamaraan ang ginagawa po nila?” he asked.
Topacio said Quiboloy will await developments of the accusations here in the Philippines.
Aside from the accusations leveled against him during the Senate hearing last Tuesday, Quiboloy also faces a string of charges before a federal court in the United States.
The criminal charges in the US will require the religious leader’s extradition if it pushers through.
On December 13, 2022, the sole women's party in Congress filed House Resolution 644 in light of the "wanted" posters released by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for Quiboloy.
"Noong administrasyon ni Duterte, pinalusot itong si Quiboloy sa kanyang mga krimen dahil malapit siya sa pangulo,” Brosas said.
The feisty lady solon asked: “Hanggang ngayon ba, palakasan pa rin?”
